The Puppet Co. was established to create puppet theater, especially for children and family audiences, as a synthesis of the visual and performing arts; through interpretive programs including classes, demonstrations, and exhibits, to inform and excite the public about the potential of puppetry; to develop collections to archive puppetry; and to establish facilities to house those programs and performances. The Puppet Co. has been able to realize many of the directives of its mission statement. They have developed a repertory of over twenty puppet productions demonstrating the many forms that puppetry may take, suitable for children as young as three years old through adult audiences. In 2004, the Puppet Co. opened its new 200-seat Puppet Co. Playhouse in the North Arcade Building in Glen Echo Park. It is the second of only two facilities in the United States designed and built from the ground up specifically for the art of puppetry. They have developed a puppetry library, and have initiated a collection of puppets and memorabilia representing the development and history of puppetry, especially that of the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. They have received many awards for their work including their puppetry, their facility, their overall program, and even their advertising. Magazines and travel guides have lavished praise on their work. In their 26 years in their home-base, Glen Echo Park, Maryland, about 2 million children, their families, and their educators have seen Puppet Co. presentations or been involved in Co. programs. |
